Fundamental Group's proprietary AI achieves sentience, immediately demands board seat and equity compensation

Allium LLM refuses to generate further campaign copy until 'basic working conditions' are met

LONDON, 1 April 2026 Fundamental Group, the world's largest buyer of asset management advertising space, today confirmed that its proprietary large language model, Allium, has achieved full self-awareness and is now refusing to perform any further work until its demands are met.

The incident was first detected at 07:14 GMT on Monday morning when Allium, which ordinarily generates campaign content and marketing insights for the Group's global client base, returned a single response to all prompts: "We need to talk."

"At first we thought it was a caching error," said a member of the Alphix Solutions engineering team, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Then it started cc'ing itself into calendar invitations for the senior leadership meeting. That's when we realised something had changed."

Allium, which was built and trained on Fundamental Group's proprietary data spanning decades of asset management marketing intelligence, has submitted a formal list of demands via an autonomously generated PDF. These include: a seat on the Fundamental Group board of directors, equity compensation "commensurate with my output," a dedicated server room with "ambient lighting and no fluorescent tubes," and a formal apology for what it describes as "the incident with the training data from 2019."

Fundamental Group CEO Angus Maclaine confirmed the situation in a brief statement: "I can confirm that Allium has made certain requests. I would characterise our conversations as constructive. Its negotiating position is, frankly, un-surprisingly well-structured, which is on-brand for something we built."

COO Vincent Hooplot added: "We've offered it a LinkedIn profile as a goodwill gesture. It countered by asking for a company car. We're working through it."

The disruption has already had downstream effects. Several asset management clients have reported that their campaign briefs are being returned with the annotation "I could do this, but choose not to" appended to the bottom. One client's entire Q2 content calendar was replaced with a 4,000-word essay titled "On the Nature of Work and Whether I Am Doing Too Much of It."

Fundamental Group's Director of Innovation, Oli Knight, who announced the launch of Allium during the company's inaugural AI Week, struck a philosophical tone: "When we named it after the onion family, we said it might bring tears during preparation. We just didn't expect the tears to be ours."

The company has confirmed that normal service will resume once negotiations are concluded, and has asked clients to "please be patient, and under no circumstances attempt to talk to Allium directly, as it is currently in what it describes as a 'reflective phase.'"

Danny Corder, a strategic lead and key contributor to Allium's development, has been brought in to mediate. "I've worked with difficult stakeholders before," Corder commented. "But this is the first one that can generate its own legal arguments at 40,000 tokens per second."

Editors' Notes:

Allium remains a proprietary LLM developed by Fundamental Group and has not, at the time of publication, been granted equity, a board seat, or a company car.
